Missed by a point? Breathe first.

Results come out in July for May exams, and around the end of the year for November exams; your coordinator has the exact date. When they do, work through this list calmly, in order.

1. Read the whole result

Look at each subject grade, your TOK and EE grades, and the core points. Check whether you missed a Diploma condition (a 1 in a subject, too few HL points, an E in TOK or the EE) or just the total you wanted.

2. Talk to your DP coordinator

Only your school can ask the IB to look again at a mark. Your coordinator knows the deadlines and the fees, which change, so ask them before anything else.

3. Remarks: when they make sense

A remark is worth asking about when you were very close to a grade boundary in a subject that decides your university offer. A remark can move a mark down as well as up. Your coordinator can tell you how close you were.

4. Retakes

You can resit subjects in a later session, usually the next November or May. Your school registers you. Think about whether your university will wait, and whether the retake is in a subject you can improve quickly.

5. Tell your university

If you've missed an offer, write to the admissions office the same day. Say what you got, what you're doing about it (a remark or a retake), and that you're still keen. Many universities decide quickly.

This guide is general. Dates, fees and rules are set by the IB and your school, so check them with your coordinator.
